Hochul’s Anti-Mask Push Puts New Yorkers in Danger
Governor Hochul is pushing anti-mask measures into the state budget despite opposition from nearly 100 organizations, 300 Jewish leaders, and 250 healthcare professionals. While she claims it will only target “masked harassment,” her plan relies on subjective judgments of intent and perceived threat — opening the door to biased and selective enforcement.
If police doubt someone's reason for masking, the “exemptions” offer no real protection. Intent is typically proven after the fact, risking wrongful arrests and forcing high-risk individuals to unmask in unsafe settings.
Masks are vital for public health, especially while COVID-19, measles, H5N1, and other viruses remain threats. We deserve to protect ourselves, especially as the Trump administration undermines public health. Criminalizing masks fuels hostility, inviting harassment, discrimination, and even violence against mask-wearers.
This law rolls back freedoms when protecting rights is crucial, giving Trump’s administration a tool to suppress dissent. Democrats should be protecting these rights, not restricting them.
